We see things, not necessarily noticed before and this observation fuels the making of marks which may be figurative, literal or abstract.
Learning to look and make marks accordingly, is the basis of all drawing and painting. Yet it is not a rigid discipline for it must take into account the individual, their desire and their ability.

Il Molino di Sotto

Our Mill House is a rustic stone building sitting in a peaceful valley beside the river Lanzo, five miles from the town of Paganico and twenty-two miles south of Siena.

Florence is an accessible day-trip.

The area is rich in culture, archaeology, flora and fauna and includes the varied landscapes of Siena, the Val D'Orcia and Monte Amiata. There are many thermal spas as well as the Maremma coastline which is approximately forty-five minutes away.

A painting holiday at Il Molino di Sotto will provide expert tuition in surroundings that will inspire your creativity whilst giving you the space to relax, explore and indulge in the Tuscan way of life.

The Course

Each course week starts with drawing from observation close to the Mill House. Buildings, natural forms, plants, artefacts, still lives, people going about their business, animals and birds will be your subject matter as you develop your skills and confidence through working in a range of wet and dry media.

Later in the week, we will explore the wider vicinity, working on location and building up a folio of visual information that can be used to create artworks, illustrations or become the basis for designs that you can translate into various craft based applications once returned home.

Il Molino di Sotto is owned by Rob and Carole Hasbury who look after all your needs during your holiday.

They are resident in an adjacent house and are the providers of delicious food and wine, local knowledge and everything you need to make you feel truly at home.

Painting and drawing tuition will be given by Lorraine Calaora, a practising artist, illustrator and teacher with over twenty years experience of working with people of all ages and abilities.

She hopes to expand your creative ability by working from observation and with others so that when you return home, you have a physical remembrance of Tuscany through drawings, paintings and the friends you make.
